2024 KCSE Results: KNEC Denies Ranking Nyambaria High as Top School

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has dismissed allegations that it ranked Nyambaria High School as the top institution in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The examination council, in a statement on Thursday afternoon, flagged a viral social media post suggesting that Nyambaria High School topped in the just released exam results with a mean grade of 10.87.

According to the disputed list, Cardinal Otunga came second among the best-performing schools with a mean score of 10.76 closely followed by Kokuro Boys and Alliance at 10.68 and 10.52 respectively.

The flagged social media post further ranked St Brigids Girl Kiminini, Strathmore School, and Pangani Girls High School at positions five, six, and seven respectively.

Other schools purported to have emerged among the top ten schools countrywide included Nakuru Boys High School, Asumbi High School, and Mang’u High.

While refuting the allegations, KNEC explained that the list circulating on social media platforms about top schools was fake and misleading. It went ahead to advise members of the public to ignore the list.

In 2020, KNEC formally abolished the ranking of schools and students claiming that it created unfair and unscrupulous competition among institutions.

The new regulation was effected during the release of the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and KCSE examination results, a move that was aimed at ending unethical practices during exams.

The new rules also triggered changes in the selection of KCPE candidates to various secondary schools as students from public institutions would be given priority to join national and extra county secondary schools.

Meanwhile, KNEC’s clarification comes hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos formally released the 2024 KCSE examinations at the Mtihani House in Nairobi.

Addressing delegates during the exam release on Thursday, January 9, Migos stated that a total of 962, 512 candidates sat for the last year’s KCSE examinations compared to 899, 453 candidates in 2023.

Additionally, the Education CS advised parents and students wishing to access their results to do so through the KNEC online portal https://results.knec.ac.ke/
