A night of frivolous enjoyment and merry-making took an unexpected turn after a police officer opened fire inside a nightclub protesting a love triangle involving his lover.
Merrymakers at the Imperial Lounge in Yatta, Machakos County, had to scamper for safety when the police officer fired 30 rounds of ammunition from an AK-47 rifle in the presence of his superiors after the romantic dispute in the wee hours of Friday.
Prior to the incident, the officer had been accused of causing considerable disturbance, prompting staff at the joint to report the matter to the authorities.
However, according to a police report, the police officer had already left the establishment upon realising that police officers from Matuu Police Station were called in to re-establish law and order.

Unbeknown to the officers was that their colleague had made his way to the station and picked up an AK-47 rifle. The firearm had been assigned to an officer on patrol.
Thereafter, the officer headed back to the entertainment joint armed and ready to unleash terror on a man who he accused of ‘stealing’ his girlfriend.
Fortunately for the man and other revellers, the irate officer was accompanied by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and other officers who seemingly sensed that the situation was about to get out of hand.
Upon arrival at the joint, drama ensued as the officers approached their angry colleague from behind in an attempt to disarm him leading to the officer firing all 30 rounds from the rifle.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the incident with the police officers successfully managing to disarm and control their counterparts.
The officer was subsequently arrested by his fellow colleagues and taken back to Matuu police station where he was placed under custody for further questioning.
Currently, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)- Yatta is conducting investigations to determine the root cause of the matter.
The latest development comes at a time when the police force is under increased scrutiny over their alleged role in abductions in the country. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has repeatedly denied such accusations but the public opinion and situation on the ground paint a contrasting picture.
