Kenya Met Lists 35 Counties to Receive Rainfall on New Year's Day

Nairobi is among the regions which could experience showers on the first day of the new year, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

In a detailed weather forecast ranging from Saturday, November 28, to Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the weatherman predicted Highlands East of the Rift Valley could experience rains in a few places.

These regions include counties like Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.

Highlands west of the Rift Valley including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties are also expected to experience rainfall on Wednesday, January 1.

Areas in the southeastern lowlands like Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County will experience showers over a few places next Wednesday.

Temperature Advisory

The Kenya Met, however, anticipates sunny intervals in most parts of the country for the remainder of 2024.

The southeastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Tana River, and Taita Taveta will have the sunniest intervals, with light showers expected in a few regions on New Year’s Day.

Between December 28 and January 1, temperatures in these regions are expected to reach highs of 31°C, and lows of 14°C, mostly at night.

In the coastal region, no rains are expected over the next five days with residents being put on alert for extremely high temperatures which could reach 32°C during the day and 24 degrees at night.

The Northern parts of the country are expected to have the highest temperatures over the next five days, with Turkana and Samburu counties set to experience highs of 36°C during the daytime. These regions will experience extremely cold temperatures at night, with lows reaching 09°C.

In North Eastern, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties will experience the harshest weather over the next five days, with scorching temperatures of 37°C  during the daytime and minimum temperatures of 17°C.
