KeNHA Announces Closure of Busy Kipande Road for 5 Days

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Friday cautioned motorists of traffic disruption at yet another busy Nairobi road until the new year.

In a notice from Director General Engineer Kungu Ndungu, KeNHA announced that traffic would be temporarily disrupted along Kipande Road, which would be closed on a single bound at a time on the diversion to Ngara Road.

According to the Authority, the partial closure, which takes effect from December 27 to December 31, 2024, is meant to enable the construction of a cross culvert at Kipande Road ‘to facilitate a seamless connection in line with the Authority’s mandate’.

Motorists who typically use Kipande Road were, therefore, urged to use alternative routes. Embu-Nairobi Highway, Limuru Road, Professor Wangari Mathai Road, and Kolobot Road are available options.

KeNHA also cautioned motorists against speeding along Kipande Road, especially around the work zones.

The authority’s statement read, “Motorists are urged to exercise caution around work zones, follow the proposed traffic management plan, and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site. “

This is the latest traffic disruption caused by KeNHA, which is seeking to consolidate road works on various city roads before the end of the year.

Days earlier, a section of the Southern bypass from Ole Sereni Interchange to Ngong Road Interchange was closed for at least two weeks to allow for the rehabilitation of the expansion joints of all the bridges along the section as well as the reconstruction of concrete pavement of the Virtual Weighbridge.

A section of Kiambu Road was also closed for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Ruiru-Tatu City-Kiambu (B115) Road earlier in December.

One of the busiest roads in Nairobi – Mombasa Road – also experienced major traffic disruption for a large part of December as the road works to repair the busy highway from General Motors to the Southern bypass entry began.

KeNHA revealed that the road works took a considerable amount of time because of the use of a new technology meant to increase the road’s lifespan.

The new technology is known as the Hand-Packed Stone (HPS) and involves the creation of a durable sub-base below the bitumen surface.
