At least 50 landowners are set to be affected by planned projects from two different companies including the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).

Through a Gazette notice dated Friday, December 27, the land owners were notified that the transmission company intends to acquire a way-leave corridor on several parcels of land.

The move is meant to facilitate the construction of 1.5km–400/200kv substation. KETRACO also intends to construct towers and conductors overlying the individuals’ pieces of land.

“In pursuance of sections 143, 144, and 146 of the Land Act, 2012, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) gives notice that the National Government intends to acquire a wayleave corridor on parcels of land listed below for the construction of 1.5km–400/200kv Kimuka Substation and Associated TL in Kajiado County,” the Gazette notice read.

Landowners whose lands are set to be affected by the KETRACO projects are set to be compensated, although particulars of the compensation were not made public.

Among the parties issued the Gazette notice include companies, individuals, and people who collectively own a piece of land, according to government records.

In a separate notice, the National Land Commission on behalf of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration revealed plans to utilize a piece of land in Samburu East for the development of security infrastructure and a training facility.  The notice targeted the owners of the targeted land, which belongs to a local community group.

Like the other landowners, the community group is also set to be compensated, with details of the compensation set to be shared by the National Land Commission on January 15.

Affected parties are expected to write a claim for compensation before the day of the inquiry and present their a copy of identity card (ID), Personal Identification Number (PIN), land ownership documents, and bank account details and present it to Ardhi House, 3rd floor.

Meanwhile, individuals and companies who are against KETRACO’s move to engage in construction on their land have been urged to raise their concerns with the National Land Commission via mail.

In October, at least 150 landowners benefited from compensation by the government because their land was earmarked for the construction of multibillion projects.

The individuals’ land had been identified for the construction of the Gatundu –Karinga – Flyover Road Project by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).

The government sought to compensate 13 land owners, whose 0.7743 hectares of land was surrendered to the National Land Commission(NLC) on behalf of KeRRA.
