In 2024, several prominent Kenyans received recognition for various roles. The recognitions were due to the outstanding achievements of individuals in various sectors including sports, legal, political, and even media.
We look at some of the notable Kenyans who received various awards and recognition for their achievements this year.
Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet
Faith Kipyegon, the formidable Kenyan marathoner and record-breaker received several global awards this year for her incredible performance.
In July this year, the 30-year-old produced a masterpiece after she emerged as the winner in the 1500-metre race in the 2024 Olympics held in Paris.
In September, Kipyegon received remarkable recognition and accolades for winning the prestigious Academy Awards in New York, United States.

Martha Koome
Chief Justice Martha Koome was in March this year-feted with the African Female Leader of the Year Awards at a ceremony held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Martha Koome was voted for her achievement as the first female chief justice in Kenya and for her accomplishments within the country’s judiciary.
The Persons of the Year awards are annual events that celebrate individuals who contribute positively to the continent’s progress.
Speaking during the award ceremony, Koome stated that the award was not solely for her achievement but also symbolised collective dedication.
William Ruto
Amidst criticism by a section of Kenyans, President William Ruto in September was honoured with the Presidential Green Industrialisation Investment Statesmanship of the Year award for his efforts in championing climate change.
The award was handed to him during the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change special session at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During the ceremony, Ruto led the discussions which focused on advocating for fair and effective climate financing that addresses the specific needs of Africa and other developing nations.
Rukia Bulle
Kenyan journalist Rukia Bulle in August won the 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. The 26-year-old, who is the ninth recipient of the award and works for Kenya’s Nation Media Group, specialises in human interest stories.
Bulle has also successfully built a strong following on TikTok through her relatable and informative content on the life of a journalist.
The judges were impressed by Bulle’s resilience and ability to handle challenging stories, her focus on highlighting under-represented voices, and her strong on-air presence.
Speaking after receiving the award, Bulle said, “Winning this award means a great deal to me. As a journalist, you constantly strive to do your best, regardless of recognition, so to be acknowledged on a global stage through the Komla Dumor Award is incredibly validating.
