Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa Brace for Rain and Heat, Kenya Met Predicts

The Kenya Meteorological Department has listed regions that will receive occasional showers even as most parts of the country will continue to experience sunny and dry weather conditions for the five days up to January 5, ahead of school reopening.

In the weekly forecast released on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, the weatherman stated that Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa Counties will receive occasional rainfall with morning sunny intervals.

Kenyans living in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka will also receive occasional rainfall.

According to the meteorological department, rains in the above regions were forecasted to occur in the afternoon, with a few places receiving the rains in the morning.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Mid Rift Valley will receive showers and thunderstorms over a few places.

“Occasional rainfall is anticipated over the Coastal region and in isolated areas within the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, and the Southeastern lowlands,” the department said in its weekly issue.

Similarly, Kenyans residing in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi were told to prepare for occasional showers and rains in the next five days.

Additionally, residents of Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, were also told to prepare for a similar weather pattern with morning sunny intervals.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department in its advisory also warned of extreme heat, particularly in the counties of the North Eastern Counties.

However, North-western Counties including Turkana and Samburu, will not receive any rainfall. Temperatures in these areas will range from 9°C to 32°C with partly cloudy skies in the night.

“Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties,” Kenya Met added.

According to Kenya Met, the night temperatures in the counties listed above were expected to drop up to 11°C in the five days.

In its announcement, the weather department urged residents of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet to brace for high daytime temperatures of up to 32°C.
