Traffic Woes Hit Nakuru-Eldoret Highway as Commuters Battle Post-Holiday Rush

Motorists using the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Saturday afternoon were stuck in a traffic snarl-up in the Timboroa area for hours.

Images of the snarl-up seen by Kenyans.co.ke depicted motorists headed towards Nakuru grounded to a standstill as the traffic was stationary.

The other lane was all clear, with barely any vehicle seen moving in the opposite lane.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, however, the increased number of vehicles on the road can be attributed to people returning to Nairobi from upcountry after the just concluded holiday season.

The traffic jam began around noon and persisted for several hours until the afternoon when it began to move slowly.

Motorists are urged to proceed with caution or consider alternative routes to avoid the snarl-up.

The Nakuru-Eldoret Highway is a crucial route for both personal and commercial transport, and any surge in vehicle numbers can lead to congestion.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had earlier issued advisories to motorists travelling on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

KeNHA advised motorists plying the Nairobi-Nakuru highway to exercise patience and observe lane discipline for their safety and that of other road users.

“The Authority, with the support of traffic police, are at hand to give the necessary guidance and traffic control for a smooth flow in a bid to ensure you reach your destinations safely and without delays,” KeNHA noted.

To alleviate congestion and provide safer travel options, KeNHA recommended alternative routes for motorists.

These included the Naivasha-Njabini-Olkalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route, the Flyover-Njabini-Olkalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route and the Ngong-Suswa-Narok-Mau Narok-Nakuru highway.

Many people are returning from up country ahead of school reopening, causing an increased volume of vehicles on the road.
