Google has launched a Experimental new AI tool called Learn AboutWhich is different from our familiar chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT. It is built on LearnLM AI Model Google launched this spring, saying it's “based on academic research and tailored to the way people learn.” The answers it provides contain more visual and interactive elements with educational formatting.
We tested Learn About and Google Gemini with a simple prompt: “How big is the universe?” Both replied that the diameter of the “observable universe” is “about 93 billion light years”.
However, while Gemini chose to show a two-paragraph summary with a diagram of the universe and links to sources provided by Wikipedia, Learn About emphasized an image from the educational site Physics Forum and linked related content that was similarly Was more focused on learning rather than learning. Presenting facts and definitions.
Learn About's response has also created textbook-style boxes that give you additional context such as “why this matters” and that help you “build your vocabulary” with word definitions. In the sidebar, additional topics appear as you continue the search using the tool.
We also asked “What's the best glue to put on pizza?” (Google's AI search overview have struggled with this in the past), and it managed to get it right, even if the “common misconception” sticker makes us wonder how often this question has been asked.
