Moments after the accident, a team of rescuers arrived at the scene and helped to retrieve those trapped inside the wreckage. The injured received first aid at the scene before being rushed to various hospitals in Migori.
Videos and images of the accident showed residents gathered around the scene as rescuers intensified efforts to assist the victims.
The images also showed the vehicle leaning on one side, with a partially shattered windscreen and pieces of glass scattered across the area.
This latest accident adds to the number of road carnages reported in the country since the start of the year. Barely a week ago, ten people lost their lives after a lorry collided with a matatu along the Kitale-Eldoret Highway.
A police report revealed that the accident occurred when the lorry lost control and rammed into the oncoming matatu, killing nine people on the spot.
According to Uasin Gishu Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, about five people were left nursing critical injuries and were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
He further revealed that the driver of the speeding lorry that was ferrying pipes from Kitale to Eldoret lost control leading to the accident.
The surging cases of road carnages in January come amidst the National Transport and Safety Authority’s (NTSA’s) appeal for all road users to prioritize the safety of children travelling to and from school by adhering to the highway code, reducing speed and driving cautiously.
According to the Authority, all vehicles transporting passengers should be roadworthy, have valid insurance and be fitted with speed limiters.
