The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has distanced itself from claims it will support President William Ruto’s re-election, insisting the party remains independent.
While addressing the press on Friday, January 10, the party cautioned its members against pushing various narratives regarding the 2027 elections and political arrangements.
In a statement from the Central Management Committee led by the acting party leader, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, the party warned that ODM remains a distinct party focused on clinching power in 2027.
“ODM remains a distinct political party in competition with all others to win power by democratic means,” stated ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

The statement from the party’s top organ comes after Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda stated that ODM would partner with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the next elections.
As claimed by Ojienda, ODM could push for the running mate position in the William Ruto presidential ticket.
“ODM will support President Ruto for a second term. On February 28, 2025, Raila will become the AUC chairperson. He will go to Addis Ababa, I will remain here with the SG. ODM will be a major player,” Ojienda claimed.
He added, “The coalition agreement may include the possibility of having a deputy president from ODM.”
ODM, on its part, reacted by stating, “We call on all our members to remember that ODM remains a distinct political party in competition with all others to win power by democratic means.”
Adding, “To this end, we must all be guarded in our pronouncements on the future of the party and particularly refrain from beating the drums of our competitors. We must continue to strengthen ourselves in preparation for the battles ahead.”
This statement comes barely hours after President William Ruto exuded confidence he will win a second term despite the heavy criticism facing his government.
Ruto, who was speaking in his backyard of Uasin Gishu, expressed confidence in clinching a second term in office, stating, “I don’t see any competition.”
Ruto, for the first time, spoke of the 2027 polls amid rising criticism online. “Until now, I’m yet to see any serious competition. Competition is between me and my track record. I haven’t seen any other competition,” he told a crowd in Uasin Gishu on Friday.
Ruto and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga are working together, something political commentators have termed a coup.
Ruto has also managed to turn the head of his former boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, and bring him into his government. This move came after Ruto orchestrated the impeachment of his first deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, in October.
