Cabinet Secretary for Water Engineer Eric Mugaa has announced that Meru Municipality’s Sewerage and Water project is expected to be completed by June this year.

Speaking at Ncabuene in Imenti North, Mr. Mugaa confirmed that he has communicated with the project contractor and agreed that the project must be completed within the specified timeline.

He said the project, which was launched in 2021, has been delayed and should be expedited to ensure that it benefits the residents.

“The contractor has agreed to commission a mega sewerage and water project in Meru Municipality, the county headquarters, by June this year,” said Mr. Mugaa.

Thus, the project entails the construction of a treatment plant as well as mega sewerage trunks to be able to serve the municipality and its environs.

“We need to dignify our sanitation facilities in the Meru Municipality as we are also doing in other places in the entire country,” said Mr. Mugaa.

On the other hand, in realisation of the fact that the trunk sewers will not be available to small-scale landlords, Mr. Mugaa added that the government has set aside Sh200,000 that will be used for the last mile connectivity to connect even those in rural areas to the sewer.

He added that the process of looking for funds for the other municipalities in the county, including Timau as well as Nkubu town, was ongoing, and similar projects will soon be launched there.

“In Maua Municipality, the contractor is already on the ground working on last mile connectivity in a sewerage system that was constructed in 2009,” said Mr. Mugaa.

“Underground water is a key resource that is underutilised in the country at large. This is what we are planning to utilise in the semi-arid areas of Igembe Central, Igembe North, and some parts of Buuri to ensure that domestic and irrigation water was sufficient for every homestead.”

He added that the government was out to ensure Kenyan women and children are not affected by hunger at any time and also reduce money spent to import food items that can be produced in the country.
