A dozen schools have been damaged or destroyed. Palisades and Eaton fires in Southern California As dangerous winds continue to impact the Los Angeles area. Several other campuses have been closed due to mandatory evacuations.
As Fire Crews are working to bring the flames under control The second largest school district in the countryThe Los Angeles Unified School District is dealing with the aftermath.
“The biggest challenge is the uncertainty,” said LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “Schools are often the places where normalcy is best achieved, no matter what crisis we are going through as a community.”
Students in Altadena, California are also processing the loss.
“My mom told me before we went to the play date that it all burned down, my classroom and everything in it burned down,” said second grader Lucy Van Voorhis. “I'm really sad, because I loved that school.”
Parents of students at the now-ruined private Pasadena Waldorf school, like famed singer Aloe Blacc, are searching for solutions. He hopes that a school that has been closed for two decades can provide a place for learning.
“All the parents and staff are looking for space,” Black said.
In the midst of the wildfire, Black felt helpless, saying, “I couldn't stop the fire from happening. I couldn't protect my children from this experience.”
But he also said the situation has given him a new perspective.
“Is this an opportunity for our kids to learn what leadership looks like? What community looks like, what heroism looks like?”
As parents struggle to give their children news about their homes or schools, teacher Blair Manzke reminds everyone what's most important.
He said, “The buildings and things are gone, but the real Pasadena Waldorf School is not. Now it may seem hard to understand, but what makes a school is what we do, the students, the teachers and parents and all the people who help us.”
School resumes amid fire
many schools that are part of LAUSD reopened on Monday.
On Wednesday, 700 children from two primary schools perished Palisades Fire Will start classes at new places.
