Traders in Gituamba Market, Gatundu North Sub-County, are set to benefit from the construction of a modern market facility commissioned by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

The project is part of the county’s ongoing efforts to promote economic growth and improve infrastructure under the governor’s transformative agenda.

Gituamba Market is one of 15 modern market construction projects planned for the 2024/2025 financial year. The state-of-the-art facility will accommodate over 300 traders and include key amenities such as a cold storage room, a kitchen, a food court, a breastfeeding room for lactating mothers, a social hall, an ICT hub, designated spaces for fresh produce and general merchandise traders, and a ramp for accessibility by persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

The market will feature a perimeter wall and floodlights to ensure security and support round-the-clock business operations.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Wamatangi emphasised the project’s importance in boosting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and fostering economic growth in the region.

“This market aligns with my government’s commitment to strengthening the SME sector. It will serve as a hub for local vendors and businesses while creating opportunities for economic growth and job creation. I am excited to see the positive impact this facility will have on the Gituamba community,” the governor stated.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Industrialisation, Tourism, and Investment, Susan Gatwiri, praised the initiative that is fully funded by the Kiambu County Government.

“This market will significantly enhance the region’s economy, serving residents across Kiambu County. It is a testament to the county government’s dedication to addressing local needs and driving development,” Gatwiri remarked.

The initiative addresses longstanding concerns from residents about the poor state of the previous market facility. Traders had previously expressed frustration over operating in substandard conditions, an issue that the new market aims to resolve.

In addition to launching the market, Governor Wamatangi also distributed socio-economic empowerment packages to residents. Beneficiaries received 10 kg of fertiliser, 2 kg of planting maize seeds, 2 kg of wheat flour, and tree seedlings.

The Gituamba Market project is expected to transform the local economy, providing a safe and efficient trading environment while supporting broader development goals for Kiambu County.
