Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in an Instagram Story on Friday that Instagram's profile grid will display content as rectangles instead of squares as part of a change expected “over the weekend.”

“I know some of you really like your classes. And square photos are, in a way, Instagram's legacy. But at this point, most of what is uploaded, both photos and videos, is vertical in its orientation,” Mosseri said. He added, “Their excessive pruning is troublesome.”

Mosseri admits that change may be “a little bit painful”, but he believes it is a “transitional” pain. “I think in the long run people will be excited to have more of their photos and more of their videos actually shown in the profile, not aggressively cropped,” Mosseri said.
