Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has reminisced about his childhood friendship with Aga Khan as he mourned his death on Wednesday, February 5.
Taking to an official statement on his X (formally Twitter), the former president revealed that he has lost a childhood friend with whom they shared strong connections since the days of Sir Ibu Pirbhai, the then leader of Ismaili in Kenya.
Sir Ibu Pirbhai served as the Chairman of the Leaders’ International Forum and was deeply involved in the community’s development. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 and received several honours for his contributions.
According to Uhuru, the friendship continued throughout their childhood moments, to his presidency, and dates until his death.

“The Aga Khan was more than just a friend; he was like a brother, a confidant, and a partner in the mission to uplift the lives of many. Our shared dedication to education, health care, and making the world a better place created a partnership that lasted for years,” Uhuru informed.
Uhuru described The Aga Khan as a lifelong friend, a visionary leader, and a tireless advocate for humanity.
The former president praised the Royal Highness for establishing high-quality schools and hospitals that have transformed the lives of many not just in Kenya but globally.
“His visionary leadership in the healthcare sector has saved countless lives. The Aga Khan University Hospital and its network of facilities remain a testament to his enduring legacy of compassion and excellence,” Uhuru continued.
During his presidency, Uhuru worked together with The Aga Khan on many projects, especially in the education sector.
The former president extended his sympathies to the Ismaili community worldwide, recognising his role as a spiritual guide who inspired millions.
His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed on in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, aged 88.
He died peacefully in his sleep, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) confirmed.
Labour and Co-op MP for Oxford East. Minister for International Development in the UK Anneliese Dodds also mourned the Aga Khan. She termed him as a huge figure in international development.
“The work of his foundations has changed the lives of countless people around the world, and he leaves a legacy to be proud of. My thoughts are with his family and those close to him,” Dodds wrote.
