A Kenol court has fined two young men Sh50,000 or in default serve a 6 months’ jail sentence for theft of four metallic bars.
John Njoroge, 21, and William Murigi, 19, appeared before Resident Magistrate Jackinda Renna where they pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing the four metallic bars worth Sh10,000 property of Murang’a County government.
According to the Prosecutor Mr. Brain Ng’ang’a, on February 4 at 5am, complaints from members of the public that some people were stealing tanks metallic bars for scrap metal sale reached Corporal Antony Bundi at Igikiro police post.
Corporal Bundi and Corporal Mbae immediately set out to the area the theft was said to be taking place and found the two accused persons and two other accomplices not before court.
The officers were able to identify the four by their street names even though they quickly fled the scene prompting the officers to chase after them.
“They were able to catch the duo, Njoroge and Murigi and returned to the scene of crime where they found the four metallic bars, a spanner and nuts used to open the water tanks,” read Nga’ng’a. The two were then arrested and taken to Igikiro police post to await arraignment in court.
The Prosecution further produced the four metallic bars and spanner nuts as evidence against the accused persons who both pleaded guilty.
In mitigation, the duo asked the court for mercy saying they were sorry for their actions.
The duo was however fined Sh50,000 or in default serve a 6 months’ jail sentence with a right to appeal in 14 days.
Further, the metallic bars would be returned to the owner.
