Several Shops Burnt After Fire Incident in Eastleigh, Nairobi

A mysterious fire broke out on Friday, February 7, at a tyre shop in Nairobi’s Eastleigh Estate, destroying several items, including unused tyres.

Reports indicated that the fire started a few minutes past noon along Eastleigh’s General Waruingi Street, opposite Pumwani Maternity Hospital. It quickly spread to nearby buildings, escalating the damage.

Videos and images from the scene showed locals watching from a distance, while others rushed to salvage property from the burning structures. Footage also captured at least three buildings engulfed in thick smoke as rescuers worked to contain the inferno.

Moments later, firefighters from the Nairobi County Government arrived and managed to put out the fire, though property worth an unknown value had already been lost.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene to assist those injured, but the exact number of casualties remains unclear with police officers spotted at the scene attempting to control the building crowd.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is yet to be established despite several speculations by residents about what could have started the inferno.

The latest development adds to the number of fire incidents reported across the country since the year began. In an almost similar incident, 19 families were left homeless after the fire burnt down several houses.

The incident which occurred on January 28, in Kericho Town began after a fire broke out in one of the houses located near the National Bank Office minutes before midnight before it spread to other buildings.

Confirming the happening, the Kenya Red Cross Society announced that it had dispatched a rescue team to the scene and that one person had already been rescued.

“A fire has broken out at a residential area near National Bank in Kericho County. Efforts to contain it are currently underway,” the Kenya Red Cross revealed moments after the fire broke out. 

“One person was stabilized on-site for smoke inhalation and 19 households were affected. The Kenya Red Cross will assess needs for possible support today.”

However, the fire was contained by the Kericho County Fire Brigade with support from the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Police and community members.
