The first cohort of the 1000 Machakos Youth Service (MYS), have completed their 21-day training and are to proceed to various Vocational Training colleges (VTCs), to attain specialised training.
The training at the boot camp has seen the youth undergo vigorous physical training, learn discipline, financial literacy and entrepreneurship which are meant to give them a head start in joining VTC.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti who presided over the pass out parade of the 1000 youths at her Whitehouse grounds said empowering youths is set to help them in the competitive job market.
Wavinya added that the programme has been a dream come true for her since she has been at pains seeing youths idling by the roadside and shopping centres due to lack of skills that could help them earn a living.
“My goal is to gradually end the culture of idling by equipping young people with skills that can help them achieve their dreams,” added Wavinya.
She commended the youth on their cooperation and discipline during the training which she said would set a good example and high standards for the next cohorts.
Additionally, the Governor noted that they were also equipped with life saving techniques to prepare them in handling emergencies when needed such as first aid and fire accidents.
“We are recruiting you for self, for Machakos, for Kenya and the world,” declared the Governor.
The youths are to report immediately to Masii, Kyamutheke, Mitaboni, Kituluni and Matuu VTCs to commence on their specialised training.
Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko on her part commended the programme as development driven and an avenue to instill discipline and patriotism among the youths.
Also present were National Youth Service (NYS) Commandant James Tembur, CECM for Education Consolata Mutisya and Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka among other guests.
