Nakuru High School Closed Indefinitely After Students Destroy Administration Block

Learning activities at Nakuru High School have been suspended indefinitely after students went on a rampage on the evening of Sunday, February 9.

The students destroyed school property within the institution over a string of grievances, mainly revolving around the food situation.

According to reports, the students’ well-executed demonstrations began around 8:50 pm and lasted for at least six hours, with police forced to intervene to restore calm.

Before authorities’ intervention, the students caused havoc, destroying a number of amenities including the administration block, classrooms, and dormitories.

Interestingly, the angry boys also broke into the dining hall and storage room stealing food with reports indicating that some students began eating the items they had taken.

It has since emerged that part of the reason the students unleashed chaos on their own institution was because of a meal that was taken off the roaster. According to some of the students, they typically consumed tea and bread during the mid-morning but the administration decided to do away with it.

Further, the students also lamented the introduction of a card system to pay for items bought at the school canteen, whilst they preferred paying in cash.

In addition, the students also accused the administration of failing to take into account their welfare after they allegedly scrapped milk from the morning tea.

Finally, a section of the students were angered by the fact that entertainment facilities at the school were yet to be upgraded despite them remitting a small fee for the project.

Following a six-hour standoff, calm was finally restored after the intervention of police and Nakuru County Director of Education (CDE) Victoria Mulili.

On Monday, February 10, the school was a ghost town as students were sent home following the fracas, and there are suggestions the institution will be closed for at least a week.

This was the latest incident of student unrest and comes two weeks after students from Teremi High School in Bungoma County went on strike over declining performance in the KCSE examination.

To express their frustrations, they stormed the principal’s home damaging his property including a house and vehicle.
