West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has officially commissioned 80 new stalls at Bendera Market in Kapenguria Ward so as to boost local trade and support small scale entrepreneurs.
The initiative is set to transform the local trading environment by providing better facilities for vendors to sell their goods, fostering economic growth, and improving business opportunities for the community.
Speaking During the commissioning ceremony at Bendera, Kachapin emphasised the strategic importance of the new market, highlighting that it would serve as a convenient shopping hub for students, staff, and residents of the surrounding areas.
He noted that the development would not only improve the retail experience but also contribute to the economic vitality of the region by providing local traders with a platform to meet the growing demand for goods and services.
“This market will not only serve the local community but will also offer traders a better space to conduct their business and the new stalls will create a more vibrant business environment and contribute to the economic growth of Kapenguria,” said Kachapin.
The Governor emphasised that the market’s strategic location near the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus is expected to boost the local economy by providing a steady customer base for traders.
“With the KMTC campus close by, the market’s strategic location is set to drive economic activity by improving access to essential goods and services,” he explained.
Kachapin pointed out that the development of Bendera Market is part of the county’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and provide the necessary support for businesses to thrive.
“This initiative is a key component of our commitment to fostering economic growth and stability within our community,” he said.
He announced that traders operating in the newly launched stalls would be exempted from tax obligations for the first year, allowing them to establish and expand their businesses without the added pressure of financial burdens.
“By giving them a one-year tax holiday, we are helping them focus on their operations and enabling them to build a strong foundation for future success,” said the Governor.
He emphasised that the county government would work closely with local security agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment for both traders and customers.
“To ensure a conducive and secure business environment, we will install security lights around the market to enhance safety, especially during the evening hours,” said Kachapin.
The governor also announced plans to open a car wash facility in the Bendera area as part of a broader effort to provide employment opportunities for local youth emphasizing that this initiative would create jobs for young people, allowing them to stay productive and avoid idleness.
“This project is not just about enhancing the local economy but also about creating opportunities for the youth to engage in meaningful work and contribute positively to their communities,” Kachapin added.
County Executive Committee member (CECM) for Trade, Industry, and Investment Clare Parklea, emphasized that the government’s efforts were part of a broader strategy to strengthen the business environment and ensure that traders had the necessary resources to succeed.
“As a county, we are dedicated to supporting our traders and creating an environment where businesses can flourish,” Parklea stated.
A local trader Ruben Loshang’ole voiced his appreciation for the new, modern facilities that he noted provide them with a better environment to conduct businesses and attract more customers.
“The new stalls are not only more spacious and secure but will also help us reach more customers. This is a big step toward improving our livelihoods, and we appreciate the support,” said Loshang’ole.
