The Coast region’s economy is anticipating a significant upswing as the Port of Mombasa welcomes two cruise ships, MV World Odyssey and MS Europe, carrying a total of 1,600 passengers.
The simultaneous arrival of these distinguished vessels marks a milestone, underscoring the port’s growing appeal as a premier cruise destination.
This influx of tourists is expected to stimulate local sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and retail, through passenger spending on excursions, local goods, and other services.
The event not only underscores its commitment to enhancing tourism in Kenya but also highlights Mombasa’s strategic position as a premier cruise destination in the region.
The MV World Odyssey, also known as the world’s largest floating campus, is making its fourth visit to our shores in just three years. Its voyages have contributed positively to the Coast community through expanding knowledge and volunteering opportunities largely done by the students aboard. Today, World Odyssey has 677 students and 178 crew members onboard.
Similarly, the MS Europa, renowned as one of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world, is carrying 334 passengers and 285 crew.
Speaking at the Port of Mombasa, KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto highlighted that the arrival of these two vessels represents the deepening relationship between Kenya and the global cruise industry and represents the trust and confidence bestowed in Kenya.
“For Cruise Ships to come into this country says a lot because it portrays that as a country we support tourism and provide security and when we have peace in the country, this is what we get in return,” Captain Ruto said.
One of the biggest passenger ships in the world, carrying 2000 passengers, is also set to dock at the Port of Mombasa next week.
Ruto added that KPA continues to market cruise tourism for the port and the country while investing in infrastructure to be able to have more ships docking.
“We have made significant investments in modernising our infrastructure, expanding our terminals, improving safety protocols, and adopting sustainable practices to protect the environment while fostering growth. Our state-of-the-art, eco-friendly cruise terminal is a prime example of our commitment to raising the standards of the cruise industry,” Ruto said.
He noted that they expect a surge in tourism, placing a well-deserved spotlight on Kenya’s rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and the exceptional hospitality it is known for.
As Kenya Ports Authority, Ruto said they are dedicated to ensuring the ports remain a global leader in maritime trade and tourism, facilitating cruise tourism, thus ensuring visitors have an excellent experience in the country.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the management of MS Europa and MS World Odessy for their continued partnership with Kenya, and for selecting our ports as a preferred stop for their passengers and we look forward to many more visits in the future,” he said.
“We are committed to making Kenya the cruise hub of the region, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders to provide world-class facilities and services. Our focus is on ensuring that both Mombasa and Lamu ports evolve to meet the growing demands of international cruise lines, and we are excited about the potential for growth in the years to come,” he added.
Ruto extended his deepest gratitude to all partners, stakeholders, and staff who contributed to making the event a reality.
Wausi Walya from the Kenya Tourism Board noted that they are excited by the fact that Mombasa is a port of call that attracts so many tourists, especially because it connects the tourists to their dream of authentic safaris that the country offers.
“We look forward to more endorsements about having more ships docking at the coast, as this is money that remains in the community in terms of their expenditure here,” Walya noted.
The MS Europa Captain, Dag Dvergastein, noted that Mombasa is the gateway to all the beautiful safaris that the guests are participating in.
