No one was injured when a Southwest plane carrying passengers was shot on the tarmac at Dallas Love Field Friday night, officials said.
Southwest Airlines Flight 2494 was preparing to depart for Indianapolis when “a bullet apparently struck the right side of the aircraft below the flight deck,” a Southwest spokesperson told CBS News in a statement.
The airline said no one was injured. A spokesperson for Dallas Love Field said in an email that the plane returned to its gate after damage from a “security incident” and passengers were deplaned. The runway was also temporarily closed, but has reopened.
Dallas police confirmed the incident, saying officers responded to a report of shots fired at 9:48 pm local time, and found that the plane had been attacked.
No further details were given on the circumstances of the incident or what the possible source of the shooting was. It is unclear how many people were on board the jet at the time, or the extent of damage to the plane.
In its own statement to CBS News, the Federal Aviation Administration said the Boeing 737-800 “was reportedly hit by gunfire near the cockpit.”
Dallas police are investigating the incident.
Earlier this week, shootings took place amid ongoing gang violence shot down three planes Which were either landing or departing in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The shooting prompted the FAA to impose a 30-day ban on US airlines flying to Haiti.
