Despite this difference in metrics, the team behind Carve claims that the new insole-free system, which relies heavily on machine learning, is actually about 6 percent more accurate than before. It's also cheaper, now not only groomed slopes but also different types of terrain can be tracked, and the app offers more training and tuition modes.
And yes, it sounds too good to be true. When asked about it, founder and CEO Jamie Grant admitted that he was surprised by the improvements, and initially expected the sensor's accuracy to be affected. They were willing to lose a few percent because the increased utility from not having insoles was worth the sacrifice.
However, what they discovered was that despite now measuring 10 skiing metrics instead of 13 and losing the ability to track pressure, their new Motion AI algorithm was still able to gather different data from your carve. Instead of pressure, sensors can more accurately track initial forward speed and mid-turn balance, while an entirely new metric is now able to measure vertical acceleration at transitions, and, importantly, powder conditions. Can adapt its findings to different localities, including
As you ski, every turn is logged and compared to the brand's now vital data set. As well as using new machine learning algorithms, as well as the half-billion turns they've already logged, they have a series of professional ski instructors who have watched over 11,000 videos of carve skiers (something like In which you can contribute (along with a friend who also uses the app), to double-check that the Ski:IQ level is in line with the real ability.

As someone returning to skiing after a long hiatus, the original Carve was a revelation. My technique improved incredibly quickly, due to a combination of my own stupidity and the app's ability to help me focus on key areas. It really made me love skiing, and, as a lifelong snowboarder, that feeling didn't come naturally.
Carve 2.0 continues to offer the same excellent level of tuition. If you ski at least eight times the system logs your performance, and when you stop it will give you your Ski:IQ for that section. You'll get coaching advice when it detects you're on a ski lift, which is still a standout feature, even if the AI voices remain oddly robotic.
