A 16-year-old boy died after being hit by a stray bullet on a St. Louis highway last weekend.
CBS affiliate Colin Brown was hurt Saturday night as he drove home from his father's car after playing a hockey game. KMOV-TV reported,
The high school junior died at a hospital on Wednesday, police said.
Police spokesman Mitch McCoy called it a “rare” situation in which someone was shot by a stray bullet in the city.
No arrests have been made but police have received tips and new video evidence.
Lily Paniuki told KMOV-TV She was in downtown St. Louis for a friend's birthday party when she heard Brown's father screaming for help. She told the station that she jumped in to perform CPR. Brown was pronounced dead at the hospital on Wednesday.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Mitch McCoy said Brown's organs have been donated, the station reports.
McCoy said, “This donation exemplifies the kind of young man Colin was and the kind of family he grew up in. His steadfast commitment to serving those around him – should inspire us all. “
St. Louis police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
More than 200 people attended Brown's honor Monday, and members of his hockey team met Wednesday to remember him. The St. Louis Blues plan to observe a moment of silence before their Saturday hockey game.
“When you're down he's the first guy to pat you down and when you're up he's the first guy to celebrate you,” Blake Ryan, assistant coach on Brown's team, told the Saints. Louis Post-Dispatch. “He was a natural leader and was always quick to do the right thing.”
Missouri Governor-elect Mike Kehoe expressed condolences to Brown's family. social media post,
“I am saddened to hear of the passing of 16-year-old Collin Brown, who was tragically shot while driving home from playing hockey on I-55,” Kehoe said. “The lawlessness plaguing St. Louis must stop, and the perpetrators responsible for this tragedy must be held accountable.”
