The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced one-year training opportunities for electricians, carpenters, mechanics, barbers, hairdressers, automotive engineers, and plumbers, among others.
In a notice shared via the government publication MyGov on Tuesday, December 3, KeNHA announced that the primary requirement for the programme is a national identity card.
The programme, Technical Capacity Development, is financed by the World Bank and is targeting unemployed Kenyans living in Isiolo, Meru, Wajir, and Garissa Counties.
According to the notice, the training will be conducted at Nkabune Technical Training Institute, North Eastern National Polytechnic, Bishop Locati Training Institute, Sensei Institute of Technology, and Meru National Polytechnic.

“The aim of this training is to equip participants with the necessary skills to enhance their employability and economic potential in various fields,” reads part of the notice from KeNHA.
The requirements for the training programmes besides being a resident of either Meru, Isiolo, Wajir, or Garissa include being a youth between 18 and 35 years.
The others are for those intending to undertake courses examined by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET CDACC) must possess KCSE and/or KCPE level certificates, demonstrating the ability to read and write.
For those seeking courses that are examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), there will be no formal educational qualifications required. “Applicants may have any level of education, including those who have not completed formal schooling or have discontinued their education at any stage,” KeNHA asserts.
KeNHA adds, “The sole pre-requisite is the possession of a valid Kenyan National ID Card.”
According to KeNHA, preference will be given to applicants who are orphaned or those from single-parenthood families or young single parents. Application forms can be collected from the office of area chiefs or at the KeNHA Regional offices at Isiolo and Garissa.
All applications must be delivered to KeNHA by 5pm on Tuesday, December 17.
Under the notice, Nabune Technical Training Institute in Meru will offer various courses, all requiring a KCPE or KCSE qualification. The courses include Electrical and Electronics, Garment Making, Food and Beverages, Plumbing/Pipe Fitter, Automotive Engineering, and Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing. Each of these courses has a duration of one year and is examined by NITA or CDACC.
The North Eastern National Polytechnic in Garissa will offer a wide variety of one-year courses, requiring a KCPE or KCSE qualification for admission. These courses include hairdressing, welding, barbering, mobile repair, food and beverages, carpentry, flooring courses, fashion design, motor vehicle mechanics, computer packages, masonry, electrical installation, and plumbing/pipe fitting. The examining body for these programs is either NITA or CDACC.
At Bishop Local Training Institute in Isiolo, the courses offered are tailoring and dressmaking, motor vehicle electrical, food and beverage, hairdressing and beauty therapy, motor vehicle mechanics, electrical wiring and installation, masonry, and plumbing. These programs are also examined by NITA or CDACC.
Sensei Institute of Technology will provide specialised courses in welding and fabrication and plant construction mechanics (offer free plant operator training), which lasts six months. The courses require KCPE or KCSE qualifications. The examining body for these programs is NITA.
Meru National Polytechnic offers a range of one-year courses that require a KCPE or KCSE qualification. These include electrical installation, carpentry, welding, masonry, security management, beauty therapy, food and beverage, computer application packages, and motor vehicle mechanics.
