new york — The search continues for the gunman who shot and killed New York UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson On Wednesday morning police sources said what appeared to be a targeted attack.
thompsonThe 50-year-old was shot in the chest at about 6:45 a.m. outside the Hilton Midtown hotel on Sixth Avenue near West 54th Street in New York City, NYPD sources said. According to NYPD sources, Thompson was not a guest at the Hilton. He was staying at another hotel and was on his way to the Hilton for a corporate event when he was attacked.
A spokesperson for UnitedHealthcare told CBS News the shooting occurred during the company's investor conference.
What we know about the suspect in CEO firing
The suspect has not been identified. New York Police Department sources told CBS News that he was a young man wearing a jacket, a black face mask, and black and white sneakers. The person was also wearing a gray colored backpack.

He was last seen running east on 6th Avenue. NYPD sources said police were trying to locate him through video surveillance.
Police are still examining surveillance images and a law enforcement source told CBS News that investigators have video of the shooting.
The suspect did not rob Thompson and it appears the attack was targeted, police said. UnitedHealthcare investigators and security personnel are combing through the files looking for a possible motive, possible past threats and disgruntled or recently fired employees, a law enforcement source said.
