Karungo Thang'wa Hits Back at DCI for Keeping Him Waiting for 7 Hours

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa on Thursday, December 5, voiced his frustrations at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on how they are investigating the Limuru burial saga.

Karungo, who is a staunch ally of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, lamented when he honoured summons from the authorities, he was kept in a boardroom for over 7 hours.

“We have been in a boardroom at DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road since 08:00 hours. We chose to exercise our constitutional right to remain silent and have declined to provide any information, as we are not obligated to assist the DCI with their investigation,” Karungo shared at half passed 2:00 pm.

He added that together with former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, who had allegedly been abducted in the aftermath of the incident, they had been holed up in the boardroom as police engaged in ‘consultations.’ Karungo expressed his worry at this development, intimating looming foul play.

“In the meantime, we are doing nothing in this boardroom while the officers engage in extensive consultations outside. We are unaware of whom they are consulting, but I’m sure you can make an educated guess,” Karungo averred.

Karungo had been summoned by the DCI to provide information on the events that led to the chaos at the burial of Erastus Nduati in Limuru. Property of unknown value was destroyed during the incident while some of the congregants sustained injuries.

At the burial, rowdy youth disrupted the proceedings by pelting stones and other materials into a tent that Gachagua and other senior leaders were in forcing him to flee. Gachagua’s car was later stoned and destroyed. Gachagua’s allies later claimed it was an assassination attempt laying blame on the State.

Gachagua, on his part, termed it an attack by the state, noting that the incident came after his security had been withdrawn, leaving him exposed and vulnerable. “This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” he stated.

Karungo was accompanied to the DCI offices in Nyeri by his counterparts Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu and MP Gathoni Wamuchomba who are leaders allied to Gachagua.

Their arrival threatened to bring Nyeri town to a standstill as drama ensued when Nyeri residents briefly engaged the police in running battles.

During the leaders’ meeting with the residents, things almost took a turn for the worst as residents turned rowdy against the police. Video footage showed the irate residents chanting anti-government chants as they tried to chase away the police.

Karungo and other Gachagua-allied leaders have accused the police of flipping the script on them by treating them as orchestrators of the Limuru burial saga claiming that they were victims of the mayhem witnessed.
