Parents Speak After Fire Tragedy Killed Their 3 Children in Kericho

The parents of three children who died in a tragic fire incident that happened in the Kapsogut area of Kericho County on Friday night have finally broken their silence regarding the incident.

According to the father Leonard Kigen, he had gone out to fend for the family before he received the devastating news of what had just happened to his children.

Two of the three children namely Sandara 12, Enock 8, and Abigael 6 are reported to have been keeping the other sibling who lived with a disability company during the incident.

”I do menial jobs around here so that my children can at least not sleep hungry. I had seven of them but now it is very sad that I have lost half the number,” Kigen stated.

”The elder ones were playing before they fell asleep. Initially, they were keeping the disabled one company. That is the reason these all children were consumed,” Judith Chemutai, a relative added.

The mother who had a total of seven children is said to have left home on Friday evening to attend a graduation ceremony celebration of boys who had undergone circumcision.

In the chilly incident, witnesses revealed that the three succumbed after they were locked inside their house by one of the siblings who had gone to play with friends.

However, the source of the fire remains unknown, even as the authorities are already investigating the incident.

Neighbours who spoke to the media revealed that unusual sounds preceded the fire outbreak, raising suspicion about a possible phone blow due to excessive charging.

”There is a sound that was heard, this was revealed by a neighbour who told us that there was a bang from the house before it caught fire,” Charles Korir, a retired chief narrated.

First responders who spoke to the press revealed that the minors’ parents were not home at the time of the incident but left a phone while charging. Villagers suspected that the phone might have exploded and started the fire.

The three children, including one with a disability, perished in the fire while inside the main house, which was made of timber and iron sheets.

All that the two parents called their belongings were also consumed by the ravaging fire incident that left them with indescribable pain even as villagers tried to console them.

The neighbours together with the father have now been left with nothing but to beg for assistance from well-wishers and local leaders to help them bury the three and assist the family to restart their lives.
