The National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) has issued fresh directives to motor vehicle owners with the new generation Kenya Dealer(KD) number plates as the crackdown on unlawful ownership intensifies.

In the directives issued on Monday, September 9, NTSA directed law enforcement agencies to impound all vehicles operating without registration plates including those unlawfully operating with the KD plates.

”Law enforcement agencies are advised to impound vehicles operating without registration plates, those unlawfully using Kenya Dealer Plates (KD) and charge the respective dealers and owners,” NTSA stated in a statement.

In the new directives to KD plate owners, they will only be allowed to use the plates when proceeding to or returning from an inspection, examination or test.

Motor owners will only be allowed to have the KD registration plates when proceeding from the premises of a dealer to a railway station or wharf for entraining or shipment.

According to the safety authority, police will be authorised to impound vehicles that will be found on the road if they will not be for the purposes of road tests after purchase or upon completion of an assembly.

Additionally, the plates will only be allowed to be used for tests or trials by users when they are en route from the purchase from a dealer as is the practice.

Consequently, the plates will only be allowed to be displayed when drivers are proceeding from a public weighbridge or NTSA’s registration facilities.

Also in the list of strict guidelines, drivers will only be allowed on the road using the plates when moving from the premises of a dealer to the premises of a purchaser or another dealer.

New vehicles that will experience a breakdown on the road, will be permitted to be towed using the plates.

Meanwhile, NTSA directed car dealers and garage owners to update their KD plate details as per the Movement Register on their website before the December 16 deadline that it had issued.

”Update KD plate details as per the Movement Register, this may be checked for free through ntsa.go.ke – Dealers & Garages Licensing (app.ntsa.go.ke/revalidation/),” it added.
