A bus carrying dozens of passengers rolled over on a highway in the upper state new york Early Thursday morning, one person was seriously injured and more than two dozen were sent to hospitals, officials said.
Twenty-eight people were sent to area hospitals, some with minor injuries, after the bus overturned on Interstate 490 in the west. Rochester According to officials, around 7 am.
“Deputies arrived at the scene to find people who were trapped inside a tour bus that had overturned on 490,” Monroe County Sheriff Tos Baxter told reporters at the scene. “First responders found several people walking along the 490 in a state of confusion who were passengers on the bus,” he said.
Authorities said the bus had left New York City around midnight and was stopping on the way to Niagara Falls.
The cause of the rollover was not immediately clear. The accident reconstruction team is trying to determine what happened to the bus, Baxter said.
“It rolled over on its side, turned 180 degrees upside down and when we got to the scene it was on its side, so it was a difficult task for everybody to get people off the bus,” the sheriff said.
Authorities said the driver was cooperative with investigators and there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.
Tribal Sun, the Massachusetts-based company identified as the operator of the bus, did not immediately comment.
“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of everyone involved in this serious incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
