A source privy to the matter confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the acting speaker and his driver were in stable condition and were recuperating from the injuries sustained after the collision.

Luckily, no casualties were reported as passengers aboard the bus did not sustain injuries. The bus was reportedly headed to Nairobi before the accident occurred along the busy Kisii – Nyamira Highway.

Authorities have since launched their investigations into the accident to determine any further details surrounding the crash.

According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), this year saw more fatalities and serious injuries among motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Between January and November, 4,047 people died from road accidents, compared to 3,726 during the same period last year. In 2024, there was a total of 20,369 accidents, compared to 19,262 in 2023. Among these accidents, there were 10,124 serious injuries, up from 9,059 last year.

Nyamira County has been in the spotlight following significant wrangles within the county assembly.

On December 14, 2023, the Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly, Enock Okero, was impeached by a majority vote of the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

Following his impeachment, Okero was asked to step aside, and Deputy Speaker Thaddeus Nyabiro assumed leadership of the assembly.

This decision to impeach Okero came just one month after a failed impeachment attempt against Governor Amos Nyaribo.

Okero’s impeachment was driven by allegations of gross misconduct and corruption during his tenure as speaker. 24 MCAs supported the motion while 11 abstained effectively kicking out the speaker.
