Trans Nzoia County has stepped up plans to boost Technical and Vocational Education Training.
Speaking at Kitale Technical and Vocational Education Training Centre (TVET), Trans Nzoia County Technical and Vocational Education Training Director, Eliud Lusweti, revealed the county has set aside Sh45 million to oversee refurbishment of TVET institutions in the region.
Highlighting the need to empower more youth with technical skills for self-employment, Lusweti said facelifting of facilities is a priority area if that has to be realized.
“As a county, we are committed to ensure that youth who are out of school get a chance to access vocational training, which will help them acquire technical skills. The skills acquired will empower and make them self-reliant,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Lusweti revealed the county has struck a partnership with a Polish organisation, Tools to Work, which will see over 32 TVETs in Trans Nzoia County receive training tools and equipment for a period of five years.
Lusweti said the partnership has come in at the right time, as it will help address the problem of equipment shortage, which has affected training in most facilities in the region.
Despite the commitment of the government to promote technical training, Lusweti bemoaned low student enrolment for the technical courses.
“The only sustainable inheritance parents can offer their children is to equip them with the skills needed for today’s global job market. Therefore, we urge parents and youth to embrace Technical and Vocational Education Training,” he challenged, revealing that the county has planned to provide startup kits for the TVET graduates.
Kitale Vocational Training Centre Manager, Beatrice Baraza, applauded Child Rescue Kenya Organisation for the efforts it has endeavoured to support TVET training by empowering vulnerable youth and young mothers in the region.
She took pride in the achievements of the graduates, many of whom have successfully started their own businesses.
As she took pride in the achievements of the graduates, Baraza challenged them to register for National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exams, which will help them advance skills and pursue higher-level certifications.
