Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has condemned the deadly attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, which left five people dead.
Taking to social media on Saturday evening, Raila expressed his sorrow, noting that the attack occurred in the city where he had studied in Germany and to which he has a deep sentimental connection.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the senseless attack in Magdeburg, Germany, which has tragically claimed five lives and left over 200 injured,” Raila wrote on X.
“Magdeburg holds a special place in my heart; it’s not just a beautiful city but also the backdrop of my journey as a Mechanical Engineering student. My thoughts and prayers are with all who have lost loved ones in this heartbreaking event. May they find solace during this season of goodwill and compassion.”

The attack on Friday shocked the world, as the perpetrator reportedly drove into the market, killing four women and a nine-year-old child, while critically injuring 41 others.
Suspected to be a hate crime, Raila also urged the global community to embrace diversity and strive for peaceful coexistence.
“In times like these, it’s evident that our world would be a safer, more harmonious place if we embraced our differences, fostered tolerance for divergent views, and truly learned to coexist in peace. Let us strive for understanding and unity in the face of adversity,” he added.
Following the attack, a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian doctor, who has lived in Germany for over a decade, was arrested.
According to a CNN report, the Magdeburg Public Prosecutor’s Office has yet to determine the motive but suspects the perpetrator may have been dissatisfied with Germany’s treatment of Saudi refugees.
Raila studied at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg while pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering between 1963 and 1964.
Earlier this year, he visited Magdeburg in a nostalgic return to his alma mater and other institutions in the city.
“I spent part of the day reflecting in Germany at my alma mater, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. I visited the Engineering Faculty, the Production Technology Department, and lecture halls, and reminisced in the halls of residence. Grateful for my foundational experiences here,” he said of his visit.
