8 Confirmed Dead After Multi-Vehicle Crash on Mai Mahiu-Narok Highway

Update, Monday, December 23: A police report has confirmed that eight fatalities occurred following two separate crashes at the same spot involving six vehicles and a motorcycle.

The first crash happened when the tyre of a trailer heading towards Mai Mahiu burst resulting in it crashing with a Premio car, a bus and a matatu. Three of the matatu passengers succumbed.

Shortly after, another trailer from the same direction arrived at the scene at high speed, colliding with a Prado whose two occupants died instantly and one died later at the hospital.

The trailer also knocked down a motorcycle killing two pillion passengers. All the deceased and the injured have been transported to the Narok County Referral Hospital. The number of injured is yet to be confirmed.


Eight people are feared dead after multiple vehicles collided at SGR Section 5, near Duka Moja, on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road in Narok County.

The accident is reported to have involved a Prado, a bus, a shuttle, and a trailer.

The driver of the trailer is said to have lost control of the vehicle while descending the Nairagie-Enkare escarpment towards Mai Mahiu, crashing into multiple vehicles, including a bus and private cars.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the aftermath of the accident shows debris strewn across the road, with traffic police already on the scene.

The actual number of those injured was yet to be determined at the time of the publishing of this article.

The Kenya Red Cross took to X to confirm the accident stating that it involved six vehicles and rescue personnel had already arrived at the scene.

They also confirmed that the injured had been taken to the Narok County Referral Hospital.

“A road traffic incident involving six vehicles has occurred at Maltauro, along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Road,” the statement read.

“Several injured people have been rushed to Narok County Referral Hospital. The Police and response teams, including EMS Kenya, are currently at the scene.”

The accident comes just a day after another accident was reported along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway at the Kinungi area.

It involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus overturning, leaving one dead and 30 more injured.

As travel plans multiply tenfold during the holiday season, travellers are advised to observe traffic rules to avoid accidental deaths, especially on black spots.
