A second infant has died in an 8-state listeria outbreak linked to recalled Yu Shang Food ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, according to federal health officials. The products were sold online and at retail locations nationwide, according to federal health officials.

Nineteen cases have been confirmed, 17 of whom are hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its latest updateStates with confirmed illnesses include: California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Tennessee.

The CDC said seven illnesses are related to pregnancy.

In California, a mother and her twin were ill and both infants died, but because Listeria was only found in samples from the mother and one twin, confirmed cases in this outbreak include only the mother and one twin.

In Tennessee, a mother and her infant were ill and the child died.

Samples from sick people were collected from October 24, 2021, to October 28, 2024, the agency said.

The outbreak may be larger than reported, the CDC said, because people who have become sick may not have gotten tested for listeria. It takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine whether a person was part of an outbreak.

Listeria can be especially harmful for pregnant people, people age 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.

People affected by the outbreak reported that they purchased their food from many stores and online where Yu Shang food products are sold.

Officials urged that people who have the recalled products should throw them out or return them. Manufactured before October 28, 2024, the recalled products include products with “Yu Shang” or “Yushang” (establishment number “P46684” or “EST. M46684”) on the label.
