Armed Robbers on Househelp's Orders to Recover Ksh1,800 Hold Employer Hostage & Steal Car

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man believed to be behind a robbery with violence incident in Kirinyaga County.

According to the detectives, the suspect with accomplices committed the act on January 23 when they broke into a home through the kitchen door after a house help asked them to attack her former employer in an effort to recover fee arrears.

”On that fateful night, the suspect and an accomplice, armed with a knife, slipped into the complainant’s home through the rear kitchen door. The unsuspecting homeowner was fast asleep in her bedroom, unaware of the danger lurking just steps away,” the DCI shared in a statement.

Upon entrance, the suspects confronted the homeowner with the knife claiming that they had been sent to collect salary arrears amounting to Ksh1,800.

The house help is said to have left the household a few weeks before the incident took place.

During the incident, one of the assailants kept the homeowner at knife-point while the other moved swiftly to a nearby bedroom, where the new house help was sleeping.

The suspect then silenced her (the new house help) by gagging her mouth and binding her hands with pieces of clothing, leaving her helpless and terrified, according to the report.

”The intruders, bold and menacing, confronted her with the knife, issuing a stern warning that any attempt to raise an alarm would be met with brutal violence,” a report from the DCI narrated.

After rounding up the homeowners, the suspects then made away with electronics among them a 50-inch television and a car that had a purse containing Ksh12,000, an ID card, and other personal documents.

”With the owners of the house subdued, the duo embarked on a brazen looting spree. They made off with two mobile phones, a 50-inch television, a microwave, and the complainant’s sky-blue Honda Fit,” DCI added.

Following the incident, detectives swiftly launched investigations and finally managed to nab the suspect from a hideout in the Kiawara area together with the stolen car.

The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment as authorities continue their search for his accomplice.
