At Least Three Dr Aggrey Boys High School Students Die in Bus Accident

At least three students have reportedly died after a bus they were travelling in got involved in an accident along the Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County.

Reports indicate the bus got involved in the accident after it experienced brake failure and lost control before overturning along the busy highway.

It is said that the trio who died were students of Dr Aggrey High School in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County, who had been sent home after a fire razed down one of the school dormitories on Thursday.

Others who also died in the accident include the driver of the bus. Meanwhile, several other passengers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Moi Referral Hospital in Voi for treatment.

Videos and images of the accident showed the bus completely damaged with a broken windscreen, windows, chairs, and deflated tyres, depicting the extent of the crash.

Similarly, a group of locals were recorded staring at the scene from a distance as others rushed towards the bus to help retrieve those trapped under the wreckage.

Moments later, firefighters from the Taita Taveta County government along with the area police officers arrived at the scene and towed the mangled vehicle away from the road before cordoning the area to pave the way for investigations.

Subsequently, the accident led to a severe traffic snarl-up along the ever-busy road, with some motorists forced to seek alternative routes to escape the gridlock.

Meanwhile, Dr Aggrey High School was closed indefinitely on Saturday, February 1, following a second dormitory fire that was reported at the institution this morning.

Today’s fire broke out hardly two days after another inferno was reported at the school. The Thursday night fire began around 7pm when the students were heading for their evening lessons after having their supper.

The fire was put out by a team of firefighters from the Taita Taveta County Government who arrived at the scene hardly half an hour after the inferno broke out. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire could have been caused by an electrical fault, potentially triggered by the ongoing rains across the country.
