Four police officers responding to a residential call in San Antonio, Texas, were shot and wounded by a gunman Wednesday night, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the Stone Oak neighborhood of northern San Antonio.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters that the incident occurred when officers responded to a call about a “suicide in progress” from a family member of the suspect.
The first officer arrived at the scene and “he was shot in the lower back,” McManus said.
“Another officer following him or at about the same time was also shot,” the police chief said. “The third officer who arrived on the scene was also shot. And finally, the fourth officer who arrived on the scene was also shot, I believe in the upper torso.”
McManus said all four officers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
By late Wednesday night, the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, was locked inside an apartment. Some nearby units were evacuated. The exact circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. McManus did not say whether officers responded.
“Right now, SWAT is trying to get this guy out. Once they have a plan, we'll see how it goes,” McManus said.
The chief revealed that the four injured officers had between four and eight years of experience in the department.
