Billy Mwangi Narrates His Abduction Ordeal and Toll on Mental Health

Billy Mwangi, a youth who was abducted and set free two weeks later, recently offered more insight into his harrowing abduction ordeal, a day after he resurfaced.

Mwangi, an Embu resident, reunited with his family on Monday, January 6, as five other abductees were released, ending a wave of uncertainty over their whereabouts and wellbeing.

In one of his first remarks since reuniting with his family, Billy Mwangi attempted to answer some pressing questions that a majority of concerned Kenyans were curious to know.

During a recent interview in the presence of his parents, he revealed his mental state was yet to fully recover from the ordeal, despite receiving medical attention.

According to Mwangi, he was not able to speak on the conditions of where he was held because he was still recovering psychologically.

“I’m not okay mentally,” he revealed, “I left the hospital yesterday and I could not recognize anything.”

Asked whether he was being fed while in captivity, Mwangi revealed he could not describe his meals since the situation he was in was not conducive.

He added, “I can’t speak on the food because the situation was not conducive for me. I’m still taking drugs recommended by the doctor. I’m tortured psychologically.”

Further, Mwangi, who was famous for his critical posts on X (formerly Twitter), clarified that he had not been on the platform since he resurfaced, insisting that tweets attached to his name were from an impostor.

Mwangi was reportedly abducted on December 24, 2024 –  an event that sparked nationwide outrage as Kenyans demanded accountability from the government.

Another activist whose disappearance led to widespread concern was Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull. The X influencer also announced he had been freed on Monday, albeit in odd circumstances.

The families of Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat also revealed on Monday that they were in contact with their kin, who also went missing in December 2024.
