The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the eagerly awaited TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) from February 2025 to August 2025.
This decision affects the tournament that will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
CAF’s technical experts indicated that additional time is necessary to ensure that all facilities meet the high standards required for a successful continental championship.
The CHAN tournament, which features only players from their home countries’ domestic leagues, is a significant event on the African football calendar.
Although important progress has been made in upgrading stadiums, training fields and other infrastructure, CAF believes that the extra time will ensure that the three host nations can deliver a world-class event in August.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe commended the efforts of Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, recognizing their dedication to enhancing sporting facilities.
“I am confident that the ongoing upgrades will provide world-class facilities by August 2025,” Dr. Motsepe stated.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are engaged in several important projects, including the renovation of existing stadiums, the construction of new ones, and improvements to transport systems and hospitality services to accommodate fans, players and officials. Additionally, hospitals and other essential services are being modernized to support the event.
Despite the postponement, CAF has confirmed that the tournament draw will take place as scheduled on January 15, 2025, in Nairobi at 8:00 p.m. local time. This draw will clarify the competition’s structure and build excitement among fans.
Football fans have shared mixed feelings about the announcement. While some are disappointed by the delay, others view it as a chance to ensure the event meets international standards.
“It’s better to wait and have a great tournament than rush and fail,” remarked a Kenyan football supporter.
CAF has yet to announce the exact dates for the rescheduled championship but remains positive that the August 2025 event will be one to remember.
