DCI Officers Shoot Dead Two Gang Members in Kakamega, Recover Rifle

Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, December 5, shot dead two armed gang members in Kakamega County.

According to detectives, the two gang members were cornered after DCI officers obtained intelligence leads to the suspects’ hideout at a rented house in Matungu village.

During the operation conducted by DCI’s Operation Action Team and Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, the officers cordoned off the rental unit before ordering the suspects to step out and surrender.

However, in defiance, the suspects declined the orders and opted for a gunfight with the armed officers, it was during the shootout that the two suspects were gunned down inside their house.

Moments after the gun battle, the detectives proceeded to conduct a preliminary investigation. During the probe, the officers recovered a rifle loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition and a motorcycle.

The area police officers revealed that the recovered motorcycle belonged to a fellow police officer who is currently in a coma at a Kakamega hospital.

The officers disclosed that their colleague was attacked by a machete-wielding gang who stole his motorcycle on the night of November 12, as he was riding from Butere township.

Following the incident, the officers secured the exhibits, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and fingerprinting to aid in identification.

In a similar incident a month earlier, police officers from Kilimani Police Station shot dead two notorious robbers in Milimani, Nairobi, on November 3.

The officers, who were on patrol along Tigoni Road, reportedly encountered a gang of three robbing a local resident. They reacted swiftly, leading to a shootout in which two suspects were killed, while the third escaped with gunshot wounds.

The officers went ahead to conduct a search that resulted in the recovery of a mini revolver, a panga, mobile phones and a motorcycle. Following the incident, two members of the public who had earlier lost their valuables to the suspects identified their property and recovered them.

“Law enforcement agencies within the Kilimani sub-county have intensified patrols within their area of jurisdiction and therefore calls upon members of the public to continue collaborating with them for a safer and secure area,” said a DCI officer.

DCI police undergo specialised training in September 2023.
