Fire Incident Reported at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi

A fire incident was on Monday, January 20, reported at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, saying the inferno began late in the evening.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be established, rescue teams rushed to the school to contain the inferno.

Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke revealed the extent of the fire, which occurred in a multi-storey building.

By Monday evening, a wave of uncertainty surrounded the safety of the students, although preliminary reports suggested that all students had been evacuated from the building.

Eyewitnesses say three fire engines were spotted around the school to contain the inferno, moments after it was reported.

Incidentally, the incident came barely two weeks after schools reopened for the 2025 academic year, which officially kicked off on January 6.

Moi Girls’ High School has a history of fire incidents, with one of the more recent ones resulting in a devastating tragedy.

In 2017, a dormitory fire claimed the lives of 10 students, with a 14-year-old found guilty of arson. She was effectively charged with manslaughter.

At the time of her sentencing, the judge ruled that she did not intend to kill her colleagues but started the fire in order to force a transfer to another school.

The Moi Girls’ fire was the latest fire incident in a learning institution, coming just five days after a similar inferno at the University of Nairobi.

The UoN administration is counting losses after a huge fire razed a section of the Taifa Hall, burning down part of the Gandhi wing. The fire department was forced to return to the scene hours later as another fire broke out again just as the midnight incident was contained.
