Turkana County Deputy Governor, Dr John Erus Lopeyok, hosted Dr Evans Gacheru, the Area Manager for Peace Winds Japan, during a courtesy visit to discuss the operationalisation of the Kalobeyei Modern Garage.

The discussions centered on ensuring the project delivers direct and sustainable benefits to the host and neighboring communities while fostering economic empowerment and development.

Dr Erus underscored the importance of establishing a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to define roles and responsibilities among partners, ensuring the effective operation of the garage.

“The county is committed to working closely with stakeholders to ensure this project directly benefits the people of Turkana. The operationalisation of the garage must extend beyond basic support to create a lasting impact,” he stated.

Launched in 2022 and completed in 2024, the Kalobeyei Modern Garage is a collaborative initiative involving the Turkana County Government, Peace Winds Japan, UN Women, Toyota Kenya Foundation, and CFAO Mobility.

The project is designed to empower women and youth by creating economic opportunities and supporting sustainable development.

The facility boasts an automotive servicing unit, a training area, and a hybrid solar-powered energy system, all of which aim to generate income and opportunities for the local population.

During the meeting, Dr Erus addressed critical issues, including ownership, operational challenges, and strategies to ensure the project achieves its objectives sustainably.

Dr Gacheru expressed optimism about the project’s potential, saying, “This is an exciting year as we finalize the plans for the Kalobeyei Modern Garage. We are eager to see how this project can transform the host and wider communities.”

Raphael Logum, Director, and Michael Aupe, Deputy Director, from the Resource Mobilization, Partnership, and Donor Coordination Department attended the meeting.
