Machakos County Government workers can finally breathe a sigh of relief after Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced the promotion of more than 1,000 county workers
Speaking on Friday, February 15, during the launch of the County Public Service Policy, which outlines guidelines for staff welfare and career progression, the governor ordered the immediate promotion of 86 staff members who are set to retire in 2025.
The governor, who addressed hundreds of workers drawn from various departments, said her administration was also on the verge of promoting more than 916 workers whose promotions had been delayed for the past nine years.
According to Governor Wavinya, the 916 workers would be promoted beginning July 1, this year, as part of the broader plan to address career stagnation.

The governor said her administration developed the county human resource policy document to address numerous challenges facing working and introduce sanity and fairness in the management of the county workforce.
“We have others who are about to retire but have stagnated in the same job group, is that fair? I have heard the cries of employees who have gone up to ten years without promotion,” Wavinya noted.
“All 86 staff that will be retiring in 2025 will be promoted with immediate effect, while some 916 employees whose promotions had been delayed for seven years or more will be promoted effective July 1st, 2025,” she added.
Wavinya also announced the introduction of an annual staff award scheme to recognise and reward hard-working staff. The governor charged the Performance Advisory Committee and the Department of Public Service to oversee the scheme.
“I also announce the introduction of the annual staff award scheme, which will identify, recognise, and award outstanding performing staff in every department,” the governor revealed.
On the same note, the governor revealed plans to employ Early Childhood Development and Education Program (ECDE) teachers permanently.
According to Wavinya, county staff in the lowest job group A will also be promoted, while county nurses were expected to begin receiving promotion letters this week.
The governor went ahead to assure the county residents of his commitment to upholding fairness in the county workforce, noting that the latest promotion contributed to 35 per cent promotable employees in Machakos county government.
