The government has commenced the process of constructing houses for police officers under the Affordable Housing Project.

In an official notice published in the MyGov issue of Tuesday, January 14, the government, through the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, invited interested parties to bid for tenders related to the housing project.

“The government invites tenders from interested eligible tenderers for the following tenders,” the notice read in part.

According to the tender notice, the 560 police houses will be built in different places including at State House in Nairobi.

In Nairobi County, 130 houses for the General Service Unit (GSU) officers will be built in State House. Similarly, the government will be building 60 units each at the Kisii Prison and the Sondu Police Station.

In Garissa and Kajiado counties, the affordable housing project is building 150 and 100 units respectively located at the Garissa Police Station and Garissa AP Camp and the Kajiado Police Station.

At the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Gilgil – Nakuru County, the government will be completing 60 unit houses.

The units will comprise of bedsitters and two-bedroom houses, with others extending to three-bedroom units.

Interested bidders have been informed that there will be an optional pre-tender site visit for interested bidders on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 11.00 am at the respective sites.

This development comes barely a month after the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja outlined how the police will be integrated into the affordable housing program.

The location of the houses was reached after the police officers identified where they wanted the houses to be built. Kanja revealed that the houses being built at police stations would facilitate the flexibility of the police.

“We are at advanced stages of discussion with the Ministry of Housing. We want to benefit from the affordable housing where we have land in our police stations,” Kanja announced.

“Houses can be built to benefit the officers so that they can work and stay in their stations. I think that is a situation that all of you as commanders would like to see attained as soon as possible,” the IG continued.
