Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung’wah, on Friday, November 29, blasted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over the Limuru burial fiasco, saying that the former deputy president is out to seek sympathy. The staunch critic of Gachagua did not take kindly to the violence that took place in his backyard.
Ichung’wah came out to criticise Gachagua for making an appearance at the burial of Erastus Nduati, terming it unnecessary and a ploy to get into the good books of Kenyans.
The Majority Leader in Parliament accused Gachagua and his allies present at the burial of disrespecting the family of the late Nduati and called for political leaders to stop politicking during funerals.
“The leaders who go to burials and churches propagating sympathy politics should stop. Such leaders should respect themselves,” he stated.

At the same time, Ichung’wah condemned the attack by goons witnessed at the burial and stressed the need to respect grieving families and religious leaders who preside over the funerals.
He went on to term the scenes observed at the burial as a big shame, noting that it was uncalled for. The MP further stated that the church has a responsibility to keep leaders who spread politics in check.
“The church also has a responsibility to keep the leaders who go political in places of worship in check and refrain them from spreading bad politics,” Ichung’wah noted.
At the same time, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa failed to heed summons by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regional offices in Nyeri to provide information about the shambles that were seen in Limuru.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, through a notice to the police, stated the reason for his no-show was that he did not have any information that would have assisted the police in their investigations.
The development comes after Karungo had initially said he would appear at the DCI offices in Nyeri to detail the November 28 incident that led to damage to property and injuries to some of the congregants.
This comes after former DP Gachagua was attacked at a funeral in Kiambu County by goons who also destroyed his vehicle. Speaking to the press after the attack, Gachagua’s allies termed the incident an attempted assassination of the former DP.
Gachagua, on his part, termed it an attack by the state, noting that the incident came after his security had been withdrawn, leaving him exposed and vulnerable. “This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Kiambu residents have pointed an accusing finger at Limuru Member of Parliament John Kiragu following the incident.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, November 27, after the incident, the locals speculated that his actions were intentional, with some hinting that Kiragu might have anticipated the commotion.
“He came and declined to sit in the VIP section and sat in the wrong tent. We became suspicious and knew there would be a possible commotion during the burial ceremony,” stated one of the locals.
