Kenya Met Announces Rainfall Over 7 Regions During This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans to prepare for occasional rainfall over the weekend from Saturday, December 21 to Tuesday, December 24.

In its advisory, the weather department announced that the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and South Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coast would experience rains.

The Highlands East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi were projected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days.

According to Kenya Met, the counties in the Highland East would receive light rainfall in the morning hours but experience heavy downpours in the afternoon.

The counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi were expected to receive beyond-average rainfall during the forecast period.

Rainfall in the above counties was expected particularly in the afternoon and would be accompanied by thunderstorms with the meteorological department urging the residents to be on the lookout for potential floods.

Other counties that were projected to experience a similar weather pattern include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot County.

Additionally, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County were expected to receive light rains in the morning and afternoon.

Temperature Advisory

With several parts of the country expected to experience rains this weekend, the meteorological department also cautioned the residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi Counties about cold nights.

According to the weather department, the said counties were expected to experience cold nights for the next five days. Night temperatures were projected to drop below 11°C.

Similarly, high daytime temperatures were expected in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet and Kakamega.

Daytime temperatures in these regions were expected to exceed 30°C with coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale forecasted to experience similar heat.
