Kenya Railways Introduces Temporary Evening Departures for Kisumu-Nairobi Route

Kenya Railways has increased the frequency of trains servicing the Kisumu-Nairobi route ahead of school reopening next week.

In a notice shared by the company on its X official handle on Thursday, Kenya Railways said that the train will depart from Kisumu for Nairobi on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Normally, there is only one train to Kisumu weekly.

“Take note of the schedule below for return trips from Kisumu. The train departs Kisumu at 6 pm on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays,” read the notice in part.

The train to Nairobi will depart the Kisumu Railway Station at 6 pm and travel through the night to Nairobi.

Kenya Railways emphasised that passengers must arrive at least one hour before departure to allow room for ticket verifications.

This schedule of the train will remain valid up to Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Kenya Railways communicated.

On the other hand, Kisumu-bound passengers will stick to the same schedule of travelling on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from the Nairobi Central Station.

Normally, the train often made one trip from Nairobi every Friday at 6:30 pm and arrived in Kisumu at 6:30 am.

The train makes stopovers in Line Saba, Kibera, Satellite, Lenana, Dagoreti, Kikuyu, Muguga, Limuru, Uplands, Matathia, Kijabe, Longonot, Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Molo, Elburgon, Fort Ternan, Londiani, Muhoroni, Miwani, Chemelil, Kibigori, and Kibos stations to drop and pick passengers. 

The return trip is usually set for every Sunday, with the train departing the New Kisumu Railway station at 6:30 pm to arrive in Nairobi at 6:35 am.

On Friday, December 6, 2024, Kenya Railways announced the resumption of train travel from the capital to Kisumu. Economy class tickets will cost Ksh900, while first-class tickets will cost Ksh2,400.

The train was launched three years ago to bring convenience to passengers from the lakeside.
