KNH Probes Stabbing of Patient Inside Ward

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed that a patient died inside one of its wards under unclear circumstances on the night of Thursday, February 6.

The confirmation follows reports circulating on social media alleging that the patient was murdered inside the hospital.

Initial reports blamed the incident on a security lapse, claiming that an unidentified individual entered Ward Seven and fatally stabbed the patient with a kitchen knife.

However, further reports suggest that the attack may have been carried out by a fellow patient, as visitors are not allowed in the wards past 6:00 p.m.

Responding to the reports, KNH Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) William Sigilali stated that investigations had begun to determine exactly what happened.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm an incident involving the tragic death of a patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The hospital is working closely with law enforcement authorities and has launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding this incident,” the notice read in part.

While extending its condolences to the family, the hospital assured Kenyans of its commitment to safety and stated that it would provide updates as more information became available.

“Kenyatta National Hospital remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all. The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors are our utmost priority,” the hospital’s CEO assured.

This tragic incident comes barely a week after the hospital was in the spotlight for patients being stranded due to Social Health Authority (SHA) system failures.

On Tuesday, the systems experienced a brief downtime, affecting critical platforms, including e-Citizen and Social Health Authority (SHA) services.

In a statement, the hospital assured the public that the issue was promptly resolved and that normal operations resumed shortly afterwards.

Barely two weeks ago, patients were once again stranded at the hospital, forcing some to march to Afya House and disrupt a medical press briefing by the Health Cabinet Secretary.
